Board of Supervisors Minutes
December 15, 2009
The Tama County Board of Supervisors met at 9:00 a.m., December 15,
2009. Present: 1st District Supervisor, Larry Vest; 2nd District
Supervisor, Kendall Jordan and 3rd District Supervisor, Dan Wilkens.
Motion by Jordan, seconded by Wilkens to approve the minutes of the
December 8th, 2009, regular meeting. All voted aye. Motion carried.
The Board met with Bill Christensen, Tama County Zoning Administrator
and Marty Wymore from Region 6 Planning Commission to discuss a wind
energy ordinance. There was discussion about some of the wording and
some changes were made. There are two items in discussion. One is the
Wind Energy Conversion Assessment Ordinance, which the Board of
Supervisors will need to discuss and act on. The other one is an
amendment to the original Tama County Zoning Ordinance that the Zoning
Commission needs to act on and then pass on to the Supervisors to act
on. Motion by Wilkens, seconded by Jordan to set public hearings and
readings for the Wind Energy Conversion Assessment Ordinance for
Tuesday December 22, 2009 and Tuesday December 29, 2009 in the Boardroom
at 104 West State Street, Toledo at 10:00 AM. All voted aye. Motion
carried.
The Board met with Lyle Brehm, Tama County Engineer to get a road
projects report.
The Board met with members of the Compensation Board to hear their
recommendations for the elected official salaries for the upcoming
fiscal year. Present were Dave Forbes, Nick Podhajsky and Jim Roan.
The Compensation Board's recommendation was for a 3% increase for the
Attorney, Auditor, Recorder, Sheriff and Treasurer; and 0% for the
Supervisors. This would amount to a total increase of $8,021.61 for the
elected officials. This would also affect the wages of the
assistants/deputies of the elected officials. This is based on the fact
that the Board feels that Tama County has some excellent elected
officials who do their job well that they want to keep in the County and
the fact that currently the County is ranked 67 out of 99 counties as
far as wages. The compensation board would like to try to get Tama
County up to a ranking of 40 and have been trying to get there for
several years. No action taken at this time.
Due to the recent snow storm the Board went over the Severe Weather
Policy in the handbook. The policy reads as follows: If the National
Weather Service issues a severe winter storm warning for Tama County,
the county office buildings will remain open but
employees who feel the need to leave work for their safety or the safety
of their family may leave by request to the Department Head. The
employee may leave by approved request and will be allowed to take
vacation, comp time, a floating holiday or no pay for this time.
The Board discussed that there may be a rare occasion where it is best
to close the offices for the safety of the employees, in this case the
policy may need to be changed. This will be discussed and reflected in
the policy handbook.
Motion by Jordan, seconded by Wilkens to approve the claims for payment
as presented. All voted aye. Motion carried.
Chairman Vest adjourned the meeting at 10:37 a.m.
