The
Tama County Conservation Board met in regular session on Wednesday, February 11,
2009, in the library, Tama County Nature Center, Otter Creek Park.
Chairman
Wrage called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m.. Members present were: Adolphs, Anderson,
Keenan and Wrage. Also present: Etzel and Wise.
Minutes from the regular session of January 7, 2009, were
read. Moved by Adolphs, seconded Keenan
to approve the minutes as read, carried. (All voting aye)

Reports and Correspondence. Staff /Work.
Wise reported on work projects
during January, attending Winterfest Workshop, completion of annual OSHA
related training, working on updating OSHA Plans, mechanical repair./ Vandalism/Enforcement Discussion of
concerns at Reinig Tract (vandalism), Ike’s Shooting Facility (trash and
semi-automatic rifle shooting), and Manatt’s Boat Landing (trash dumping) were
discussed./ISAC Etzel will be
attending ISAC in Des Moines in March/IACCB
Annual Conference To be held in Decorah on September 10- 12./IACCB Spring Board Member Conference To
be held in Kossuth County on March 28./Fun
Nite for the Nature Center The annual fundraiser is slated for Saturday
evening, April 4./MyCountyParks.com The
new website promoting CCB’s in the state has just come on-line. Etzel indicated
the site is not fully operational yet but will be an outstanding site to
promote the facilities and programs of all CCB’s across Iowa./Hansen Addition Upcoming work for
Parcels A & B include construct a 3.6 acre pond in Parcel A and plant
native vegetation in Parcel B. Etzel will meet with NRCS staff to get their
recommendations for Parcel B.
Ben
Cecak, Toledo, spoke to the board regarding a project he would like to
undertake as part of his effort to reach Eagle Scout. Ben wishes to construct
50- 60 fish habitat structures to be placed at Otter Creek Lake. He has secured
donations for most of the items needed. If agreeable with the board he would
start this spring by cutting plastic tubing. It is anticipated that he will
complete the project by summer. After acknowledging the value of the project
and thanking Ben for pursuing this it was moved by Adolphs, seconded Anderson
to accept the Eagle Scout project as proposed.
Etzel
reported to the Board regarding FEMA funding that has been assigned to damaged
areas in the county conservation board system. He indicated that there are a
few remaining to be written up by FEMA officials. He also reminded the board
that much of the work will have to be paid by the county first and will receive
reimbursement later.
The
Board discussed making application to the Tama County Community Foundation
(TCCF). Etzel indicated that he would like to file an application requesting
funds for the Tama County Nature Center display component. After discussion it
was moved by Keenan, seconded Adolphs to file a grant application with the TCCF
in the amount of $15,000 to be used for development of the Nature Center
Display component, carried. (All voting aye)
Information
received regarding Earth Day t-shirts was shared with the Board. Etzel asked
permission to order some shirts to offer for sale at the Fun Nite for the
Nature Center event. After discussion it was moved by Adolphs, seconded Keenan
to order 20 shirts, carried. (All voting aye)
The
initial meeting of the Tama County Conservation Board occurred in January,
1959. The Board discussed possible ways to commemorate the event. Etzel asked
permission to approach the editor of the Tama News-Herald regarding a special
commemorative issue for publication later this year around June. It was moved
by Wrage, seconded Keenan to approach the News-Herald regarding a special
commemorative issue, carried. (All voting aye) [Note: Also discussed was a fall
celebration similar to that celebrated for the 40th anniversary.
Etzel will report back at a later date.]
After
discussion of assorted conservation topics it was moved by Anderson, seconded Keenan
to adjourn, carried, Adjourned 8:45 p.m..
