Tama County Public Health and Home Care

Meet the Tama County Board of Health

The Tama County Board of Health was formed and convened for the first time in 1968. This was a result of the Local Health Act of 1967. 

The Tama County Health Service originated November 18, 1966 as a pilot home health-training program with a grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity.George Pettingill, director of Benton, Iowa, Poweshiek and Tama Community Action Program announced the opening of the Agency supported in part by the AEA grant with added funds from Tama County and the Jaycees of Tama County.

In February, 1967, the Agency received word from the Social Security Administration office in Kansas City that they had met the qualifications for participation in the Health Insurance Benefits Program (Medicare).This announcement initiated the first Medicare Service in Tama County, outside physician care.

Current members of the Board of Health include Dennis Mallory, DO.,
Chairman, serving since 1987, Sam Young, Vice Chairman, serving since 1986, Walter Cochran, Secretary, serving since 2006, Dr. Scott Piper, serving since 2006 and Sherry Parks, PA-C, serving since 2006.
